When a finished component needs a large bore, starting from solid stainless bar can mean paying for material that will immediately become chips. For many machined parts, stainless steel hollow bar – also called mechanical tube – can provide a closer starting geometry and reduce the amount of metal that must be removed. That can matter when production teams are trying to control cycle time, tooling wear, scrap, and material cost.

The key is not that hollow bar is always better than solid bar. The right starting form depends on the final part geometry, grade, wall thickness, mechanical requirements, and machining plan. Where the Savings Can Come From

Consider a valve body, bushing, sleeve, cylinder component, or other part that requires a large central bore. If the machinist starts with solid bar, the entire bore must be drilled, bored, or trepanned out. That adds machine time and creates a significant volume of scrap.
